FULLERTON --A 3-year-old girl remains hospitalized after she was mauled by her family's pit bull, police said.

The attack occurred around 7:45 p.m. Monday while the girl was in the back yard of her home in the 200 block of Costa Court, said Fullerton police Sgt. Mike MacDonald.

The initial investigation found that the girl and her mother took food to the pit bull, which was chained, and placed it within the length of the chain. The mother walked back inside and the girl stayed with the dog, MacDonald said.

The girl's father and 11-year-old brother were in the house watching television when they heard screaming. The girl's brother ran outside after he saw Fly, a male pit bull the family has had for a while, standing over his sister, MacDonald said.

The girl's mother was in the kitchen doing dishes, MacDonald said.

The girl's parents rushed her to St. Jude Medical Center suffering from lacerations and wounds to her face and neck, MacDonald said.

The girl was then taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where she remains in the pediatric intensive care unit.

The 4-year-old pit bull was taken to Orange County Animal Care Services, said Ryan Drabek, a spokesman for the shelter.

“The owners have released the dog to us for euthanasia,” Drabek said.

The family told police the pit bull had never shown aggression toward a family member, MacDonald said.

Drabek said the pit bull was impounded in 2007 after it got lose and was returned to its owners.

The incident is being investigated as a child neglect case.
