Wilson, NC --A 5-year-old boy underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon for injuries he sustained in an attack by the family Rottweiler.

Wilson County Sheriff Wayne Gay released a statement Tuesday afternoon that the child was mauled in the backyard of his home at 6056 Webb Lake Road around 12:40 p.m.

"The child was found with multiple wounds about the head and torso," the release stated. "The child's mother was also treated for dog bite wounds to her legs."

The names of the victims were not released Tuesday because not all of the family members had been notified.

First responders from the Bakertown Volunteer Fire Department along with Wilson EMS responded to the incident, along with deputies with the Wilson County Sheriff's Office.

The boy was transported by Wilson County EMS from the scene directly to Pitt County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Maj. John Farmer said that no further details surrounding the mauling would be released until the investigation was completed.

The Rottweiler has been seized and is currently in the custody of the Wilson County Sheriff's Office Animal Enforcement Division.
