Toledo, OH (WTVG) -- A 10-year-old boy is recovering this morning after a dog attack. Several witnesses took action to fend off the animal.

A dog is now in the hands of the dog warden after breaking loose and running down a kid. On the 300 block of Spencer a pit bull attacks and neighbors run to the rescue.

"I took the belt off and I put it around his mouth."

It happened just before 6:00 Wednesday night. Witnesses say a woman was loading her kids into a car when the dog broke loose.

Pam Oberdier witnessed the attack. "The dog came running from in between the houses. It had a chain hooked to him. He jumped in the car after the kids. The little boy jumped out the other side. The dog chased him around the yard." That's when Oberdier called for help.

Joe Custer and Nick Kellison joined the fray.

Nick Kellison says, "He started snapping. I had to pick a hammer up. I had to smack the dog. I feel bad, but I had to smack that dog in the mouth with a hammer."

The two men held the dog down until Toledo police arrived with the Lucas County dog warden to take the dog away.

Meantime, paramedics treated the 10-year-old boy at the scene.

"This is another story that's going to give pit bulls a bad name. It's the dog, it's not the breed," says Oberdier.

Joe Custer says "It was the owner's fault for not being responsible."

Police are saying they have not been able to contact the dog's owner. Neighbors are saying that boy is lucky the two men were nearby. Police also say another woman saw the attack while she was driving by. She stopped and got out, only to get bit on the arm. Officers tell us that woman drove herself to the hospital where she was treated and released.
