BENTON TOWNSHIP --A 5-year-old St. Joseph boy suffered facial injuries and head wounds Tuesday when he was attacked by a dog in Benton Township, police reported.
Tyler Seeley was playing with other children in the yard at a rental property his father, Howard Seeley, owns at 219 Hampton Road, said the boy's grandfather, who is also named Howard Seeley.
The children were playing with a ball, which rolled over near a dog chained in the yard, and Tyler went to fetch it, Township Police Chief Vince Fetke said.
The dog attacked Tyler and started biting his head, Fetke said. Police received the call at 11:13 a.m., he said.
Tyler's father pulled the dog away, and the boy was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, where his facial injuries and head wounds were treated, Fetke said.
Staples were placed in Tyler's head at Lakeland and he was released from the hospital Tuesday afternoon, said Howard Seeley, the boy's grandfather.
"It could have been a lot worse," he said. "Fortunately, my son reacted quickly and got the dog off of him."
He said his son was doing some repair work at the property Tuesday when the attack occurred.
Annette Curtis resides at 219 Hampton Road, Fetke said. She was not at the house when the attack occurred, he said.
Curtis' son, who lives in Grand Rapids, owns the dog, Fetke said. He said he does not know why the dog was at Curtis' residence Tuesday.
Berrien County Animal Control took the dog, a Rottweiler mix, and placed him in quarantine, Officer Dan Atherton said.
Atherton said the dog will remain in quarantine for 10 days while it is observed for rabies-related behavior.
Curtis said the dog had received all required injections, but she did not have any proof, Atherton said.
