IRON RIDGE, Wis. -- A 4-year-old girl was attacked and killed by a dog Wednesday afternoon in Hubbard Township near Iron Ridge, according to the Dodge County sheriff.

Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said the girl was taken to Beaver Dam Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The 4-year-old victim was visiting the home where the attack happened. Both families said they knew each other, and the girl had been to the home before, Nehls said.

The dog was on a leash and chain in the back yard of the residence with a length that permitted access to the entire yard where the attack took place.

The dog was a boxer and was taken to the Dodge County Humane Society, the sheriff said.

The Sheriff's Department said it is working with the Dodge County Medical Examiner's Office on the death investigation.

TOWN OF HUBBARD. -- A 4-year-old girl has been killed after she was attacked by a dog at a home on East Neda Road.

Troy Erickson, a neighbor, was the first adult to notice the dog going after Taylor Becker, who was from Hustisford.

"Pulled in the driveway and ran over there. Sure enough, here was this dog on top of the girl," Erickson told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray.

After pulling the dog from the child, Erickson pounded on the home's window. A woman who lives at the house and the girl's mother ran outside. The resident was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher while the distraught parent attempted CPR.

The dispatcher asked, "somebody was bitten by a dog?"

The caller answered, "she was attacked. She's not responding... please!"

"Who's not responding?"

"The girl."

Authorities say when they got to the rural neighborhood, they found the girl unresponsive with multiple wounds. She was taken to a Beaver Dam Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon.

"The unbelievable effort that was put forth to try to save this girl was like nothing I've seen before in my life," said Sheriff Todd Nehls. "We'll never know why or what occurred to make this dog snap like it did and attack this poor, innocent girl."

The Dodge County Sheriff's Department says the dog, a Boxer, was chained in the back yard. That chain gave the dog access to most of the yard. Authorities say the dog was not chained when they got there, but the think the dog got out of its leash during the attack.

The girl was playing in the yard. Investigators think the attack could have happened even if the dog had remained on the leash.

The girl and her family were visiting the home where the attack took place. The family was apparently friends with the family that lives in the home.

Authorities say they don't know of anything that would indicate a history of violence with the dog.

An autopsy on the child is planned for Thursday.

The dog has been taken to the Dodge County Humane Society. The animal's owner told investigators that he wants the dog put down.

Dodge County, WI -- A 4 year-old child lost her life after a dog mauled her on Wednesday. The dog, a Boxer, had been chained in his backyard.

According to WTMJ, the 4 yr-old girl was playing in the backyard where the dog was chained. It appears that the child was the daughter of family friends of the dog's owner.

This horrifying death highlights one of the primary downfalls behind chaining or tethering dogs. Not only is it detrimental to the dogs, typically causing depression, and frustration, but it can literally be deadly, as most tethered or chained dogs experience increased aggression.

Organizations, such as the Coalition to Unchain Dogs strive to educate dog owners about the many dangers of chaining dogs and work with owners to build fencing that frees the dogs from life on the end of a chain.

The child's tragic death also highlights the importance of not leaving children unsupervised with dogs. In this instance, extra supervision should have been exercised in light of the dog's size and the fact that he was a tethered dog.Wednesday's tragic death has more than one victim. The innocent 4 yr-old little girl that will never see adulthood, and the dog that will likely be euthanized after killing a small child.

A dog that endured a frustrating life on a chain...an existence known to be capable of ruining an otherwise good dog.

Lessons can be learned from tragedies. Help educate other dog-owners about the dangers of tethering or chaining a dog. Help educate parents about the importance of supervising dog/child interaction.

IRON RIDGE, Wis. (AP) -- A sheriff says criminal charges seem unlikely in the death of a 4-year-old girl who was mauled to death by a family friend's dog.

Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls says the dog that killed Taylor Becker, of Hustisford, had no history of violence, but nobody saw the attack. He says there's still no decision on whether the dog will be euthanized.

Taylor was playing Wednesday in a yard near Iron Ridge where the 5-year-old boxer named Rocky was chained before it apparently freed itself and attacked.

Nehls says his department will hold a "critical incident stress debriefing" for responders to help them deal with the emotional impact

She was transported via Mayville EMS and Beaver Dam Fire Dept Paramedics to Beaver Dam Community Hospital where she was pronounced deceased around 2:00 p.m.

The girl and her family were visiting the residence where the attack took place. The families are friends and the girl has been to the residence on prior occasions.

Currently, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Dept is working with the DC Medical Examiners Office in the death investigation.

“This is a very emotional event for all involved, our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” stated Sheriff Todd Nehls.

IRON RIDGE, Wis. -- – Taylor Becker,4, was with her parents visiting family friends when she was attacked by a 5-year-old Boxer named Rocky.

She had been playing in the backyard of the home alone with the dog that was tied to a pole on a leash and chain. No one knows what happened to trigger Rocky, but investigators believe the dog slipped out of its leash and then attacked the girl.

A neighbor saw the attack from the roadway and ran to the family’s front door, telling them to call 911. CPR was performed on Becker for nine minutes and emergency personnel worked on her for an hour, but Becker would die from blood loss. “She was bitten mutiple times. She did receive help fairly quickly, but these were non-survivable injuries. They were very severe injuries,” Dodge County Medical Examiner P.J. Schoebel said.

No criminal charges are expected to be filed, and Rocky has been quarantined at the Dodge County Humane Society.

The girl had been at the home before, and the couple who own Rocky have three children of their own so I wonder what the hell happened?

They say that a chained dog is more likely to be more aggressive than one that isn’t, but this dog had no history of violence whatsoever. Regardless, sucks for both families. I’ve included a video that contains the 911 call made that day.

Sheriff: Charges Unlikely In Fatal Dog Attack
Dog Fatally Mauls 4-Year-Old Girl In Dodge County

IRON RIDGE, Wis. -- As two families cope after a fatal dog attack in Dodge County, the sheriff said criminal charges seem unlikely in the case.

Taylor Becker, 4, of Hustisford, was mauled to death Wednesday afternoon by a family friend's dog.

She's described as charming, beautiful and energetic, WISC-TV reported. She was visiting a family friend's house with her parents and older brother when the attack occurred.

Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said the dog, a boxer, had no history of violence.

"We have no information at this point to lead us to believe that there has been any incident at this home or any incident with this dog of aggression or biting anybody," Nehls said.

Taylor was playing Wednesday in a yard near Iron Ridge where the 5-year-old dog, named Rocky, was chained before it apparently freed itself and attacked. The sheriff said it's unknown why the dog attacked.

The dog's owners, the Beauprey family, said that in the three to four months they've had the dog, there have been no problems or signs of aggression.

Both families are speaking and holding onto their friendship -- Taylor's father included, WISC-TV reported.

"He expressed that he holds no ill-will towards this man -- that they are very close families, close friends -- and he wishes that relationship to continue," Nehls said.

The boxer is currently in custody at the Dodge County Humane Society. The sheriff said it's likely, at the owner's request, that the dog will be euthanized.

"We're in no hurry," Nehls said. "I think eventually euthanasia is going to take place; the dog will be put down. But we want to wait the 10 days, get some tests from the dog to see if the dog did have some rabies so that we can share that with the family. It may be a concern with the other five puppies on the scene."

The boxer is the father of those puppies, but the puppies were not outside at the time of the incident.

While the sheriff said criminal charges are unlikely at this point, the matter remains under investigation as the Dodge County Sheriff's department researches the dog's history and where it came from before it came to the Beauprey family.

Nehls said his department will hold a "critical incident stress debriefing" for responders to help them deal with the emotional impact.

Authorities: Dog Kills Girl In Dodge County
Victim's Parents Were Friends Of Dog's Owners

TOWN OF HUBBARD, Wis. --A 4-year-old girl has been killed by a dog in the Town of Hubbard on Wednesday.

Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said the boxer was apparently tied to a pole when it managed to free itself shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday. The dog then attacked the girl, who was playing in the same yard, authorities said.

Nehls said the girl was visiting a family friend's home when the dog got loose and attacked her. The child's mother was inside the house picking up her son from a sleepover when the attack unfolded on her daughter outside, WISC-TV reported.

A man who was passing by witnessed the attack and tried to stop it.

"I was on my way down to the hardware store, and I noticed on my right this dog was playing with something," said Troy Erickson.

Arickson said he thought he saw the dog playing in the yard with a rolled up rug, and he said he wasn't prepared for what he actually witnessed.

"I checked it out and sure enough, 'Oh my God, it was a little girl here.' The dog had her by the throat," Erickson said.

He said he yelled at the dog in an attempt to get it to release the child.

"I was just screaming at this animal, saying, 'Let go!' And it backed off," he said.

Erickson then alerted those inside the house, instructing them to call 911.

"Man, it didn't look good. She was all full of blood; her eyes were all full of blood and stuff," Erickson said. "It's a sad, sad, sad thing. I don't ever want to see that stuff again."

The sheriff said the girl died as she arrived at the Beaver Dam Community Hospital, before she could be flown to a hospital in Madison.

"The extent and the effort that everyone exerted to try to save this girl's life was unbelievable, unbelievable," Nehls said.

Nehls said the dog is typically tied to a post in the back yard but was free when deputies arrived.

It is not known what provoked the attack.

"So we have a lot of unanswered questions, and we're probably never going to get the answers because there are no witnesses to (the beginning of) the attack," Nehls said.

A couple of neighbors said that sometimes the dog roams free, and one said she is scared of the dog.

But authorities said the dog had no previous history of violence.

The Dodge County Humane Society took possession of the animal, and it will be held in quarantine for 10 days. The sheriff said that's standard procedure. Nehls said officials have to make sure the dog isn't rabid although they believe it's current on its shots.

The sheriff said it is too soon to tell if the dog will be euthanized.
