HIGH POINT, N.C. - A 4-year-old girl was seriously injured after being attacked by a pit bull mix dog at a home on Nance Avenue, police said.

Police said the girl was playing with a neighbor's child, ventured into the dog's area and fell. That's when, police said, the dog attacked her.

Family members of the girl said two witnesses nearby heard the commotion and pulled the dog off the girl.

EMS workers took her to Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem. She was last listed in stable condition, suffering from injuries to her head.

Police said the dog was taken to the Guilford County Animal Shelter to be quarantined for 10 days.

Police said the dog hadn't previously showed signs of aggressiveness, and no charges are expected in the case.
