BRIDGETON -- A 14-year-old Bridgeton boy was bitten in the face and body by a pit bull while playing football at a residence on Oak Street Monday, authorities said.

The boy, a neighbor, was transported to South Jersey Hospital-Regional Medical Center for treatment of a large wound to the face and puncture wounds to the insides of his legs and arms, according to Bridgeton Police Sgt. Michael Pastirko.

Pastirko said the facial wound required stitches.

The status of the child was not available, but Pastirko said his injuries were not life threatening.

Police said that the teen was playing football with friends when a blue nose pit bull, a family dog of the residence, attacked him.

The dog was on a chain but apparently got loose, Pastirko said.

Police believe that the dog did not have updated shots, but did not know if it was registered.

The pit bull was put under quarantine in the house, and the matter is pending further police investigation.
