A Watsonville girl was severely injured Thursday when she was attacked by a neighbor's dog, suffering cuts to her face, legs and back, police reported.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to a home at 300 Las Lomas Drive at around 5:38 p.m. to investigate a reported dog attack, police said. Responding deputies found a 7-year-old girl who had been attacked by a neighborhood resident's Rottweiler after the dog ran into the girl's home, Deputy Joseph Crivello reported.

Police said the Rottweiler attacked the girl after breaking free of a leash chained to a fence and chasing the victim's family dog into their home.

The Rottweiler reportedly saw the 7-year-old girl and her 2-year-old sibling before attacking the girl, police reported.

Firefighters and paramedics treated the girl at her home before transporting her to a local hospital.

Deputies notified the Monterey County Animal Control Department to advise them of the attack.
